Tesla Seeks Buyer for Its Landmark Virtual Power Plant
Tesla is seeking bids for its pioneering Virtual Power Plant (VPP) in South Australia. This network of around 7,000 household batteries plays a crucial role in the state's renewable energy grid, helping meet demand peaks and providing essential system services. As the first of its kind in Australia, the VPP still stands as the largest in the country, according to Tesla, despite claims from competitors like AGL and Origin Energy.

The Scale and Potential of Tesla’s VPP
Tesla's VPP boasts a capacity of 35 megawatts (MW), with 70% paired with rooftop solar, contributing 25 MW. All these systems are installed in public housing under an agreement with the state government. Tesla sees significant potential for expanding the VPP, but insists on remaining the supplier of its Powerwall batteries and Autobidder software while also handling installations.
South Australia’s Leading Role in Renewable Energy
South Australia is a global leader in renewable energy, with 75% of its electricity demand already met by wind and solar in 2023. The state aims to achieve 100% net renewables by 2027. As more rooftop solar capacity is installed, storage solutions like household batteries and VPPs will become increasingly critical to manage the surplus energy generated.
Why Tesla Wants to Remain Involved
Tesla highlights that VPPs and household batteries are essential to support South Australia's growing renewable energy needs. They help stabilize the grid by "orchestrating" distributed energy resources, a key factor as the share of renewables continues to rise. Tesla wants to ensure it remains involved by supplying its third-generation Powerwall batteries and Autobidder software, which helps automate energy trading.
Tesla’s Broader Retail Energy Plans
While Tesla is looking to sell its South Australia VPP, the company remains focused on launching its own retail energy business in Australia. Tesla obtained a license for this venture earlier in 2024, and it will operate separately from the VPP sale. The retail energy service is intended for Powerwall owners and members of Tesla's broader VPP network, providing them with energy trading and storage solutions.
Energy Retailers Eyeing VPP Growth
Big energy retailers like AGL and Origin are increasingly promoting VPPs as part of their future business models. By leveraging consumer energy resources—such as rooftop solar, household batteries, and electric vehicles—they aim to create a more distributed grid. These VPPs give retailers closer relationships with consumers, which will be vital as they transition away from centralized power generation.
The Sales Process
The sale of Tesla's South Australian VPP is being managed by Planum Partners, with non-binding offers due this month. Tesla hopes to finalize the sale by the end of the year, marking a significant shift in its involvement in Australia's renewable energy market.
