Labor’s Victory Sets the Stage for Energy Storage Expansion
Western Australia’s Labor government, led by Premier Roger Cook, has secured another term, paving the way for one of the country’s most generous household battery rebate programs. Under the $387 million Residential Battery Scheme, households could receive up to:
✅ $5,000 rebate on the main grid
✅ $7,500 rebate for regional Horizon Power customers
The goal? Over 200MWh of small-scale battery storage to help absorb excess rooftop solar and ease grid demand.

The Missing Piece: Wind & Solar Development
While WA has made progress with large-scale batteries, wind and solar projects are lagging, raising concerns about replacing coal-fired power plants by 2030.
⚡ Only four major wind/solar projects are in the pipeline before 2030.
⚡ The state grid remains isolated, limiting power-sharing options.
⚡ Federal & state governments aim for 6TWh of new wind & solar, but progress is slow.
What’s Next?
A federal renewable energy capacity auction is in the works, targeting 23GW of new wind & solar and 9GW of storage—but WA’s unique grid rules complicate things.
