Australia’s First Live DER Marketplace Gets $20M Boost
Western Australia has received $20 million in federal funding to create Australia’s first live Distributed Energy Resource (DER) marketplace, integrating rooftop solar, home batteries, EVs, and smart appliances into the grid.

Key Highlights
Project Jupiter will allow WA households to participate in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), maximizing returns from solar panels, home batteries, and EVs.
By 2028, all new DER systems in WA will be VPP-ready, enabling greater energy savings and lower electricity prices.
The project builds on Project Symphony, which laid the groundwork for DER coordination.
WA’s South West Interconnected System (SWIS) is one of the world’s largest isolated grids, making DER integration crucial.
WA saw a peak renewable energy contribution of 85.1% in November 2024, proving the region’s potential for a clean energy transition.
Why It Matters
Lower Energy Bills: Households with solar & batteries will gain access to new retail products & tariffs for better returns.
Grid Stability: VPPs will help balance supply & demand, reducing reliance on coal & gas.
Battery Boom: WA’s battery storage capacity surged by 425MW in Q4 2024, with batteries now covering 36% of fast-response energy demand.
Expert Take
Darren Miller, ARENA CEO: “Project Jupiter is a milestone in Australia’s renewable transition, ensuring DER integration strengthens WA’s grid reliability.”
Andrew Blaver, Western Power: “By 2028, all new DER in WA will be VPP-ready, unlocking greater value for households.”
The Future of WA’s Energy Market
With rooftop solar, batteries, and EVs playing a growing role, Project Jupiter is set to revolutionize WA’s power system, offering cheaper, cleaner energy for everyone.
