First Battery Units Installed at Liddell Site

AGL has celebrated the installation of the first battery units at its Liddell site in the Hunter Valley, marking a significant step in its transition from coal to clean energy. This development is part of the Hunter Energy Hub, a major initiative to repurpose former coal-fired power station infrastructure for renewable energy use.

AGL Reaches Major Milestone with Liddell Battery Installation

Powering the Future: Liddell Battery Project

The Liddell Battery is a 500MW, two-hour duration, grid-scale battery being constructed on the site of the retired Liddell Power Station. Once complete, it will provide crucial energy storage and grid firming capacity to support the transition to renewables. The project involves installing 1,548 battery cubes, each weighing over 8 tonnes.

On-Track for 2026 Launch

Construction began in June 2024, and the battery is expected to become operational by early 2026. It will join AGL’s Torrens Island Battery (250MW) and Broken Hill Battery (50MW), strengthening AGL’s energy storage portfolio. The total cost of the Liddell Battery project is estimated at $750 million.

Supporting Infrastructure and Partnerships

Transgrid will play a key role in the battery’s integration, constructing and operating a new 330/33kV substation, a short 330kV overhead transmission line, and making upgrades to the existing switch yard to connect the battery to the grid.

A New Era for the Hunter Energy Hub

The battery marks the first major project within the Hunter Energy Hub, following the retirement of the Liddell Power Station in April 2023. AGL plans to reuse existing infrastructure, including grid connections, transport access, and water systems, across 10,000 hectares of prime industrial land.

A Hub for Renewable Growth and Innovation

AGL’s vision for the Hunter Energy Hub includes attracting green manufacturing, waste recycling, and additional grid-scale renewable projects. The hub is expected to support energy supply for New South Wales, contribute to emissions reduction goals, and generate new jobs and investment in the region.
