Advancing Distributed Energy in Western Australia
The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has allocated $20.8 million to Western Power for Project Jupiter, a three-year initiative aimed at seamlessly integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the South West Interconnected System (SWIS).

Key Features of Project Jupiter
First Live DER Marketplace: Integrated with Australia’s wholesale energy market to enhance grid stability.
Scalable Solution: Builds on Project Symphony to enable large-scale participation of solar panels, batteries, and EVs.
Consumer Benefits: Households with DER can join Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), earn financial rewards, and lower electricity costs.
Grid Optimization: Better energy distribution reduces reliance on traditional power sources.
Growing DER Adoption in Western Australia
40% of SWIS households already have rooftop solar.
30,000 new solar systems installed annually.
Increasing uptake of home battery systems for energy storage.
A Step Toward a Smarter Energy Future
Andrew Blaver, Western Power Head of Distribution Energy Transition:
“By 2028, all new DER connected to Western Australia’s network will be able to participate in a VPP, unlocking greater value for households.”
Darren Miller, ARENA CEO:
“Project Jupiter will help decarbonize the grid while ensuring reliability and affordability for consumers.”
