Boosting Australia’s Battery Manufacturing Capabilities

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has opened consultations for the $523 million Battery Breakthrough Initiative, aiming to enhance Australia’s battery manufacturing sector. Announced in the 2024–25 Federal Budget, this initiative is designed to strengthen the country’s supply chain resilience and offer significant economic and workforce opportunities in the renewable energy landscape.

ARENA Launches $523M Battery Breakthrough Initiative for Consultation

The Critical Role of Batteries in Energy Transition

ARENA CEO Darren Miller emphasized the importance of energy storage for achieving Australia’s emissions reduction goals. "Energy storage technology is crucial for our renewable future. Solar and wind can provide low-cost energy at scale, but we need efficient storage for when that energy is needed," he explained. The initiative aims to drive the commercialisation of battery manufacturing, create clean energy jobs, and capitalize on Australia's expertise in this field.

Supercharging the Battery Manufacturing Sector

The Battery Breakthrough Initiative seeks to collaborate with the industry to identify key opportunities that can boost Australia’s battery manufacturing capabilities. Miller stated, “We want to work with industry to pinpoint where Australia can make the biggest impact in battery manufacturing and take a leading role in energy storage.”

Aligned with National Battery Strategy

The initiative forms a key part of the Federal Government's National Battery Strategy. ARENA is working in partnership with the Department of Industry, Science, and Resources (DISR) to ensure the program's success, with a particular focus on producing active materials, battery cell manufacturing, and battery pack assembly.

Consultation and Program Design

ARENA is seeking feedback on the draft program design, including areas such as market readiness and funding structures. Funding could come in the form of production-linked payments or capital grants, depending on project needs. The consultation period is open until 10am on Monday, 7 October 2024, with plans to launch the initiative by late 2024 or early 2025.
