The Australian government has announced a $125 million commitment to help Pacific nations transition to renewable energy, strengthening energy security and reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.
Empowering Pacific Communities with Renewables
The funding includes $75 million for the REnew Pacific program, aimed at delivering off-grid and community-scale renewable projects in remote Pacific regions. These initiatives will enhance access to lighting, water, agriculture, education, healthcare, and communications, fostering better livelihoods and food security.
Supporting Energy Transition Planning
An additional $50 million will fund the Australia-Pacific Partnership for Energy Transition, focusing on feasibility studies, grid transition modeling, and collaborative efforts with universities to maximize the benefits of renewable energy investments.
A Step Toward Global Climate Leadership
Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized that the investment reflects Australia’s commitment to climate leadership while helping Pacific nations meet their climate goals and boost economic resilience.
Broader Climate Action Commitments
This announcement follows a series of climate funding pledges, including a $126 million program targeting vulnerable regions and a new finance facility to unlock private capital for climate-related loans.
