In a major stride for energy security, the Western Australian Government has secured additional power for the Goldfields region. Partnering with TransAlta, this back-up generation will leverage resources from BHP Nickel West’s temporarily suspended operations. After months of discussions with energy producers, this initiative is set to bolster the region’s power reliability until more permanent infrastructure arrives in 2026.
Temporary Power Relief on the Way to Long-Term Solutions
The collaboration provides a critical bridge for Goldfields as the government works on securing new generation sources. This temporary solution is made possible through strengthened resources and operational improvements at the 220kV line and West Kalgoorlie Power Station. Key upgrades include:
Enhanced Maintenance Teams: More on-ground support and the addition of a local contractor will enable faster responses to any power interruptions.
Upgraded Control Systems: Advanced technology, including the installation of a Starlink satellite communication system, ensures seamless coordination.
Bolstered Battery and Black Start Capacity: These upgrades support the grid’s resilience during unexpected outages.
Proactive Network Protocols: Adjustments to network settings mean quicker recovery and less impact during outages.
Millions Invested in Network Infrastructure
Since 2021, the government has funneled nearly $130 million into Kalgoorlie’s energy infrastructure, investing in modernized compensators, transformers, and rea
