Listening to Communities as Eraring Power Station Nears Closure

The Net Zero Economy Authority has officially opened consultations to understand how best to support workers and businesses affected by the planned closure of the Eraring Power Station in August 2027. This is one of Australia’s largest coal-fired power stations, and its retirement marks a major step in the country’s shift toward clean energy.

Preparing for a Clean Energy Future: Eraring Closure Consultation Begins
Understanding the Impacts on Workers and Industry

This consultation aims to gather real-world insights into how the shutdown will affect people in the region—particularly employees, contractors, and supply chain businesses that rely on Eraring. The Authority is exploring whether a formal Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP) is needed to help these workers transition into new roles.

What Is the Energy Industry Jobs Plan (EIJP)?

The EIJP is a national framework that ensures workers impacted by the energy transition get the support they need. If applied to Eraring, it would require businesses to provide career coaching, financial advice, reskilling opportunities, and even flexible work options to help employees prepare for the next chapter of their careers.

Helping Workers Find New Opportunities

If the EIJP is adopted for Eraring, the Authority will also roll out practical support like a job-matching platform and dedicated coordinators on the ground. These coordinators would help connect workers with emerging job opportunities in the region, including roles in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing.

The Human Side of the Energy Transition

David Shankey, CEO of the Net Zero Economy Authority, shared that around 216 workers are expected to be directly affected by the Eraring closure. “This consultation helps us assess what support is already in place and where the gaps are,” he said. “We’re committed to ensuring that no one is left behind as Australia moves toward net zero.”

Collaboration With Local Stakeholders

The Authority plans to work closely with Origin Energy (the owner of Eraring), local unions, and supply chain businesses to understand current preparations and what additional support is needed. Public submissions are being accepted online until 18 July 2025, with in-person visits and meetings scheduled in June.

Giving Communities a Voice

Community members, businesses, and workers are encouraged to participate in the consultation process. If the need for an EIJP is confirmed, the Authority will apply to the Fair Work Commission to implement it formally, ensuring timely and structured support for affected workers.

Helping Regions Adapt for a Greener Tomorrow

The consultation is happening well in advance—more than two years before the scheduled closure—to allow everyone involved enough time to adapt, reskill, and plan. It reflects a broader commitment to making sure Australia’s energy transition is just, inclusive, and people-first.
