Call for National Coordination

A new research report by the Reliable Affordable Clean Energy for 2030 Cooperative Research Centre (RACE for 2030) advocates for a nationally coordinated strategy to unlock the full potential of Consumer Energy Resources (CER) in Australia. The report, authored by Mark Paterson and Matthew Bird, reviews nearly 200 studies, trials, and projects from the last five to seven years, highlighting gaps that must be addressed to fully leverage CER.

Harnessing CER for the Future

The report notes that while initial research has focused on mitigating CER's negative grid impacts, future efforts must integrate CER into Australia’s power systems. The authors propose three core objectives: aligning research with emission goals, maximizing societal benefits, and accelerating progress through efficient projects.

Federal Support for CER Integration

RACE for 2030 CEO, Bill Lilley, emphasized the need for a future-ready power system that integrates the projected four- to five-fold growth in rooftop solar. He pointed out the significant benefits of fully utilizing CER, including reducing investments in transmission and generation infrastructure.

Advancing CER Capabilities

Mark Paterson called for a shift in approach, noting that traditional power systems were not designed for the dynamic, “tidal” behavior seen in areas with high CER usage. He stressed the need for a system transformation that goes beyond reinforcing old structures, especially as Australia faces a significant increase in rooftop solar installations.

The Role of Global Innovations

The report highlights that Australia's energy transition is under global scrutiny due to its leadership in rooftop solar and innovations like Dynamic Operating Envelopes (DOEs). However, Paterson warns that without accelerated development of integrated systems, Australia risks falling behind regions like the UK and Europe.

Empowering Consumers in the Energy Market

Paterson concluded that Australia needs 21st-century grids that empower households, businesses, and communities to use their energy resources in ways that benefit the entire system. Achieving this vision requires a comprehensive research and action program to bring all elements together effectively.
