Inspiring the Next Generation of Energy Experts

A group of Year 10 students from Jackson School in St Albans recently got a firsthand look at what a career in renewable energy could look like, thanks to a special tour of the Melbourne Renewable Energy Hub (MREH), operated by the State Electricity Commission (SEC).

Shaping Young Minds at Victoria’s Mega Battery Hub
Inside One of the World’s Largest Batteries

Located in Plumpton, the MREH is home to a 600MW battery energy storage system – one of the largest globally – featuring 444 battery units and three massive 335-tonne transformers. Once it becomes operational in late 2025, the system will store excess rooftop solar energy and release it during high demand, powering up to 200,000 homes at peak times.

Learning from the Experts

The tour didn’t just showcase impressive tech – students had the chance to speak directly with engineers and technical specialists. These professionals shared their personal career stories and explained what it’s like to work on such a pioneering project.

Why Early Exposure Matters

SEC CEO Chris Miller emphasised the value of connecting students with real-world experiences in energy. “People are the driving force behind the energy transition,” he said. “These experiences help young people understand the potential of renewables and encourage them to get involved.”

Partnerships for Education

The MREH is a joint venture between the SEC and Equis Australia, a renewable energy investor and developer. Johan Mouton, Delivery Director at Equis, highlighted the importance of sparking early interest: “It’s vital we show the next generation how exciting and impactful a career in renewable energy can be.”

More Engagements to Come

This visit was supported by Future Connect, an organisation that builds training and employment pathways for youth in Melbourne’s northwest. It follows a March tour by Engineers Australia student ambassadors. More educational tours are already being planned as part of the SEC and Equis’s ongoing commitment to student engagement.
