Big Boost for Victoria’s Clean Energy Ambitions
Victoria is charging forward in its renewable energy journey with the approval of two major clean energy projects under the fast-track Development Facilitation Program (DFP). These newly approved developments – a massive solar farm in Colbinabbin and a battery energy storage system (BESS) in Dederang – are set to help lower electricity bills and bring more sustainable power to Victorians.

Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment and Thousands of Jobs
Since the expansion of the DFP to include renewable energy initiatives in 2024, over $4 billion in clean energy investments have been unlocked across 15 projects. The Victorian Government says this wave of projects will deliver around 1,500 new jobs in construction and operations, driving economic growth and energy independence.
Powering More Homes, Storing More Energy
Together, the Colbinabbin and Dederang projects will produce enough electricity to power approximately 540,000 homes each year. The accompanying battery storage systems will be able to handle peak evening energy demands for close to a million households – a major step forward for energy reliability.
Colbinabbin Solar Farm: A Game-Changer
The Colbinabbin solar farm, led by Venn Energy, is a 500MW project expected to energise about 210,000 homes annually. It also includes a 300MW battery system designed to store surplus power and meet evening demand for an estimated 100,000 homes.
Dederang BESS Project Delivers Clean Storage Power
Meanwhile, Mint Renewable’s 400MWh battery system in Dederang will be capable of powering 69,000 homes during periods of high demand. In addition to cleaner energy, this project is set to generate 150 local jobs during the construction phase.
Community Input and Agency Oversight
Both developments were required to consult with nearby landowners and relevant agencies such as the Country Fire Authority, Agriculture Victoria, and local water authorities. These checks ensure that projects align with local expectations and environmental regulations.
A Renewable Future for All Victorians
The Victorian Government estimates that achieving its renewable energy targets will generate $9.5 billion in economic activity. By 2040, the energy workforce is expected to more than double to over 67,000 people – bringing long-term benefits, especially to regional communities.
Leaders Back the Fast-Track Strategy
Victorian Planning Minister Sonya Kilkenny said, “We’ve fast-tracked enough renewable projects to power more than half a million households with cheaper and cleaner energy.” Minister for Energy and Resources, Lily D’Ambrosio, added that “Victoria already has the cheapest wholesale energy prices in the country – and these fast-tracked approvals will help more homes benefit from that sooner.”
